I recently completed my
P51D using Flitemetal and was extremely pleased with the outcome.
It is a great product and relatively easy to work with. Its a Top Flite
giant 1/5 scale with Zenoah
G62 and Robart retracts. Prior to application of Flite-Metal, the balsa sheeting was
covered with silkspan with finishing
epoxy, then primed. Three view drawings were scaled up, then panel lines were tranfered to the P-51's surface prior to cutting and applying individual panels. Flite-Metal is soft and pliable enough to go around extremely tight corners (the cowl was completely covered, for example). Individual panels behind the side exhausts are buffed to a high polish to simulate the stainless steel panels. Black and white checker board color over Flite-Metal is TopFlite Lustrecoat. A flat clear coat was shot over everything to keep fingerprints off. I haven't flown it yet - still trying to get up the courage... Steve Glick |
